Travel Information

Language

Bangladesh’s primary language is spoken and written Bangla, although English is widely understood, with English road and street signs found nationwide.

Electricity

Bangladesh’s electrical current is 220 volt AC and utilises different plugs and sockets, therefore travellers should carry a plug adapter kit.

Currency

The Bangladeshi unit of currency is the Taka with 1 USD = approx 85 Taka. Major currency bills and travellers cheques (passport required) can be cashed at hotels, banks, tourist shops, shopping centres and money changers, with banks or authorized money changers usually offering the best conversion rates. Tipping is not required, but seen as a complimentary gesture in Bangladesh. Some hotels and restaurants add 10% service charges to bills.

Time

Bangladesh is Six hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (+6 hours GMT).

Bangladesh Climate

Bangladesh has a subtropical monsoon climate characterized by wide seasonal variations in rainfall, high temperatures and humidity. There are three distinct seasons in Bangladesh: a hot, humid summer from March to June; a cool, rainy monsoon season from June to October; and a cool, dry winter from October to March.

General Business/Trading hours

1. Standard commercial business hours are Sunday to Thursday, 9 am to 5 pm.
2. Banks are open Sunday to Thursday, 10.00am to 3.30pm (except public holidays).
3. General Government Departments hours are Sunday to Thursday, 9.00am to 5.00 pm (1–2pm lunch break).
4. Many of Bangladeshi stores are open 7 days a week 10am to 10pm.
