Storage and Refrigeration

Bangladesh is a tropical country where average daytime temperature ranges between 23 degrees Celsius to 34 degrees Celsius. Seasonal vegetables and fruits need refrigerated storage facilities (commonly known as “Cold Storage”) to be sold later. The IFC initiated a joint venture for establishing a cold chain with an investment of BDT 54.68 crore jointly with Golden Harvest, which will be investing the rest BDT 127.68crore.

Flawless refrigerated transportation and repository is required for perishable food items. The cold chain market size had been estimated around 1.3 Billion in Bangladesh food industry. According to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, annual productions of vegetables, and fruits have been increased to 12,983 tons and 4,677 tons respectively. This big amount of produced delicate products need proper cold storage facilities to ensure non-rotten food supply.

Bangladesh is largely an agro-based country where most vegetables and fruits are preserved at adjustable temperature between 30 -50 degree Celsius for marketing off- seasons at a higher price in major urban markets. The Government of Bangladesh inspires mini cold storages powered by solar or other alternative power back through SREDA in order to keep our cold chain logistics effective. Two pilot plants of 6-8 tons capacity is going to be installed in association with PKSF to ensure the safety of foods.
